Continuing Education Policy

Purpose

Requirements

InterNACHI's Continuing Education requirements are very straightforward.  Members must complete 24 hours of continuing education per calendar year, the attendance of which must be verifiable (all member's continuing education accomplishments need to be uploaded to the members-only education log). Two exceptions exist and are as follows.

Exceptions

  1. New Member Exception : New members need not complete any continuing education in the first calendar year they join InterNACHI. Example: A new member who joins InterNACHI in July of 2005 need only complete 24 hours of continuing education by December 31, 2006.
  2. Cumulative Exception : Members need not complete 24 hours of continuing education if their average continuing education hours completed per year is equal to or greater than 24.  Example: An inspector who completes 48 hours of continuing education in his first year would not be required to complete any continuing education in his second year. In other words, members are not penalized for completing more continuing education than the required minimum. This exception was adopted to encourage inspectors to seek out continuing education options longer than 24 hours in length.

Qualifying Continuing Education

InterNACHI's qualifying subject matter is quite broad. Anything reasonably deemed to be inspection-related can be considered qualifying including CEU's earned for other inspection associations, construction seminars, and code enforcement training. Courses, classes, and seminars all qualify. Example:  A mold seminar that lasts 2 hours qualifies as 2 hours of continuing education.  InterNACHI Chapter meetings qualify for 1 hour of continuing education (even though they last longer).   If you are an education provider or school and seek free approval from InterNACHI, visit:  http://www.nachi.org/educationseal.htm

Note:  24 Hours of acceptable Continuing Education Hours (CE Hours) per year are required to maintain Full InterNACHI Membership.  Excess CE Hours may be carried over into the following year.  All continuing education must be related to the inspection, construction, or design of buildings and related systems.  Chapter meetings must have educational speakers to qualify.  It is the members responsibility to maintain documented proof of completed CE Hours in the event of an audit by InterNACHI.  Continuing education claimed must be posted to the Online InterNACHI Members Continuing Education Log.

What Doesn't Qualify?

Some things do not qualify as continuing education:

  1. Any continuing education that is not verifiable.
  2. In-house training. Any training you receive on the job from the inspection company you work for does not qualify as continuing education:
  3. Ride-along mentoring. Any training you receive by assisting another inspector does not qualify, however we do reward inspectors who mentor fellow members (see table above).
  4. Repeat courses. Taking the same class or course twice does not count double.
  5. Indirect subject matter. Business, marketing, accounting, and other subject matter not directly related to the performance of inspections does not qualify.
  6. Books and videos. Buying and reading a book or watching a video about inspections is great, but does not qualify as continuing education.

Verification

InterNACHI members are required to load all details of their continuing educational accomplishments to the members-only education log, including as much detail as possible.  All other proof of completion of courses, seminars, etc. should be retained by the member in case further verification is requested.
